Meriaura delivers metal concentrates for Boliden by using Meriaura’s unique EcoVoy concept that reduces emissions. In this collaborative pilot project, five shipments of approximately 5000 tons of cargo each are made by Meriaura’s biofuel compliant vessels between Gävle and Kokkola, Kemi, and Pori. By choosing the Meriaura EcoVoy option, Boliden significantly cuts its carbon dioxide emissions, saving about 15 tons of CO₂ per trip, with a total savings of around 80 tons across all five trips compared to traditional fossil fuel transports. The total life cycle emissions for the five voyages using biofuel amount to less than two tons of CO₂.
The EcoVoy concept is based on Meriaura’s vessels’ ability to use biofuel as an energy source. When using 100% waste-based biofuel produced by the Meriaura’s subsidiary VG EcoFuel Oy, the transport’s life cycle emissions are reduced considerably, 97.7%, compared to the use of fossil fuels.
The EcoVoy concept, audited by KPMG according to the ISAE3000 standard, guarantees the emission reductions resulting from the use of biofuel to customers. The production of VG Marine EcoFuel™ is ISCC-certified and the raw materials for the fuel are derived from domestic industrial by-products and recycled materials.
”Our customer, Boliden, aims to become the world’s most environmentally friendly metal producer. The maritime sector has been particularly challenging in terms of reducing emissions, and we are very pleased that our cooperation is contributing also to the sustainable development of maritime transport”, says Meriaura’s COO Mathias Landor.
