During the reporting year, we were able to improve our operations on many fronts. We expanded wastewater collection on ships, successfully increased the use of bio-oil in our fleet, and ordered two low-emission, bio-oil-powered Eco Trader vessels. Long-term efforts to improve occupational safety bore fruit, and the goal of a year without work accidents was achieved in 2024. Our carbon intensity decreased, although only slightly. So far, we have managed to improve our carbon intensity by 7.8% compared to 2021.

The year was also marked by preparations for tightening regulations. We conducted a double materiality analysis, which confirmed the assumption that by far our greatest environmental impact comes from the emissions of our ships. The analysis also provided us with good tools to highlight the dimensions of social responsibility and good governance in sustainability reporting. However, at the beginning of 2025, reporting requirements were eased at the EU level, and we are ultimately not obliged to prepare a CSRD report.

“Regardless of regulation, we will continue to develop the extent of our reporting year by year. We believe that open reporting promotes the development of sustainability. By comprehensively monitoring and evaluating the impacts of our operations, we find areas for improvement. By reporting on our impacts, we can track how we have succeeded in our sustainability work,” summarizes Meriaura’s sustainability expert Esko Pettay.
