Meriaura has selected the Atmosmare Foundation as the recipient of its 2025 Christmas donation.
Atmosmare, founded in 2008 is a Finnish foundation that supports marine protection, climate change mitigation efforts, and research in the field, while also developing practical solutions to address the challenges posed by climate change. The projects supported by Atmosmare emphasize the critical role of the oceans in regulating the climate: healthy oceans and their rich biodiversity absorb carbon and regulate temperatures, making their protection an essential part of climate action.
The Atmosmare Foundation has studied the climate-cooling effects of shipping emissions and has proposed that sulphur emissions from ships could be permitted when their cooling effect is at its greatest and health impacts are minimal. In winter, reducing sulphur emissions causes a cooling effect in some areas, while in summer sulphur emissions effect cloud formation and increase the reflectivity (albedo) of the earth help to reduce warming of the planet.
Atmosmare focuses on projects where significant impact can be achieved through small, well-targeted investments, but implementation requires agility, a willingness to experiment, and long-term commitment. While Atmosmare operates and supports projects in Finland, its activities also extend to global solutions, particularly those that often fall outside the scope of more traditional environmental organizations.
By supporting the Atmosmare Foundation, Meriaura aims to contribute to building a more sustainable relationship with the sea—and climate. The future of shipping, maritime logistics, and the marine environment are closely interconnected.
