Sustainable development

Our commitment to the environment

Climate change and the global state of the environment have shown that we require an immediate change in our day-to-day practices globally. Environmental issues need to be taken into account in all activities. Energy production must be generated from more reliable, sustainable and less hazardous sources, whilst total energy consumption must be minimized whenever possible.

Meriaura Group operates in a number of renewable energy and energy efficiency-related projects both on land and offshore. We have also set tough targets to increase the use of renewable energy and decrease carbon dioxide emissions in our own actions. Developing and implementing of new sustainable forms of energy are one of our ambitions. We are on the right way, but much remains to be done.

Pioneer in biofuels at sea

In Meriaura Group we have strong expertise and open-minded attitude for biofuels development. Our newest EcoCoaster vessels use regularly 100% bio-oil. The raw material for the biofuel comes from industry side streams, and therefore is not competing against food production. The waste based bio oil is ethically sustainable and it reduces carbon dioxide emissions up to 97%. VG Marine EcoFuel is produced by VG EcoFuel Ltd in Uusikaupunki, Finland.

Energy efficiency in all actions

In all activities we aim at the most energy-efficient solutions. In the shipping business, the most effective energy-saving method is to reduce fuel consumption, and this is carried out in many different ways, eg. precise and accurate route optimization, fuel consumption monitoring and training of personnel.

In 2017 we introduced Fleetrange, a new cloud and IoT-techology based program for connecting and visu- alizing our fleet in real-time. Fleetrange combines i.e. geographic information of our ships with digitalized route planning, which improves chartering and oper- ating efficiency of our fleet.

We are operating in the highly dynamic Baltic Spot- market where voyages are short and changes frequent. With Fleetrange we optimize voyage planning, minimize ballast voyages and improve our energy efficiency. Meriaura participated in the development of Fleeetrange as a pilot project.

Developing more environment friendly ships

Meriaura Group and its partners Foreship Ltd and Aker Arctic Technology Inc. have designed a new ship concept. VG EcoCoasterTM is an extremely energy efficient dry cargo carrier, capable of using alternative fuels, EcoFuel. The new vessels meet all the maritime environmental regulations coming into force in next few years, and in many cases will even exceed them. At the moment we have two 5000 DWT EcoCoasters in our fleet, m/v Eeva VG and m/v Mirva VG

VG EcoCoasterTM is designed to cause considerably less environmental impact than conventional dry cargo vessels. The hull and machinery of the newbuildings are optimized to the speed of 10,5 knots in open water conditions. Power required for Ice Class 1A is achieved by a diesel electric driven booster unit. The aim is to almost halve the fuel consumption compared to conventional dry cargo vessels of similar type and size, and therefore also cut emissions remarkably. The vessels will be equipped with a dual fuel system, main engine being suitable for biofuel and MGO. Biofuel for the vessels is produced in VG EcoFuel’s (part of Meriaura Group) refinery located in Uusikaupunki.

CO2 emissions followed more carefully

We want to track our emissions, and in 2018 introduce CO2- emissions reports for our customers. With Fleetrange we calculate emissions for each voyage performed. We report transport emissions per unit shipped, and compare sea transport with different modes of transport. CO2 reports will be part of our standardized quality management. Our customers can further use the reports for their own purposes. We believe that eco- efficiency and customer satisfaction are mutually supportive goals.

Involved in building a sustainable society

We want to be in key position in developing sustainable energy. Open deck and heavy cargo carriers Meri and Aura have participated in demanding offshore wind farm and cable installation projects in the Baltic Sea, North Sea and UK.  Aura worked 3 years at southern Baltic Sea as offshore wind farm cable laying vessel.

We are major transporter of recycled materials on the Baltic Sea. We want to be involved in building a sustainable society based on circular economy and clean energy.

Investments in circular economy and clean tech

Sybimar Ltd., part of Meriaura Group, has built a bioenergy solution based on closed circulation where waste, waste energy, nutrients and CO2 are used and recycled back to the energy and food production. Our aim is to make the energy and food chain as carbon neutral as possible. The unique ecosystem includes a land based fish farm, greenhouse, bio gas plant and bio oil production plant.
