Meriaura – 30 years of Corporate Social Responsibility
– and the story goes on
Traditionally companies have been established for the principal purpose of generating profits for their shareholders. However, Meriaura’s story is different. Since its foundation, the company has pursued having a positive impact, through its business activities, on solutions regarding the environment and equality.
The 1980s was globally an era of strong economic growth. Balancing this growth with social and environmental responsibility, and harmonization of globalization into business were contemporary themes. The worst-case-scenarios of the Cold War nuclear arms race could be left behind. Climate change, the so-called “greenhouse effect” had been launched to broad public. Under these conditions, almost 30 years ago in 1986, Meriaura Ltd was set up with a strong ambition to develop sustainable transport and energy solutions.
Meriaura Group operates in a number of renewable energy and energy efficiency-related projects both on land and at sea. Developing and implementing new sustainable forms of residues-based energy are one of our ambitions. We have designed innovative ships, deck cargo carriers ‘Aura’ and ‘Meri’, as well as our newest ship concept, extremely energy-efficient VG EcoCoasterTM, which is an embodiment of all the above. Two EcoCoasters are currently under construction to be delivered summer/fall 2016.
Meriaura Group is also a significant employer regionally. Since the beginning of the company's history, we have given opportunities for people with no formal training to start in the maritime industry. Broad-minded attitude has opened up opportunities for many careers to develop, both on land and at sea.
Along with all this, we have carried 2-3 million tons of goods across Europe annually.
Today the world is changing and becoming more turbulent and restless, as we already predicted and feared in the 1980s. Therefore we decided to donate to charity the funds reserved for customers’ and partners’ gifts this year. We supported Cancer Foundation, Finn Church Aid refugee work and Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation for protecting the forests. We also donated a considerable sum for Åbo Akademi University for the research of bio and circular economy. Our annual calendar, which could already be called a tradition, we however decided to carry out in honor of our 30th year of operation that is about to begin.
On behalf of whole Meriaura team, I would like to thank you for the past year and wish peaceful Christmas time and a prosperous New Year 2016!
President of Meriaura Group
